Weather
Peru’s weather varies greatly by region. Expect mild humidity in Lima, desert heat in Ica and Nazca, and cooler mountain air in Cusco and Rainbow Mountain. Pack layers and prepare for sudden weather changes.
Lima
Lima has a mild desert climate. Expect cloudy mornings, cool breezes, and occasional mist, especially from May to October. Temperatures range from 15°C to 22°C (59°F to 72°F).
Paracas, Ica & Nazca
These coastal and desert regions are typically hot and dry. Daytime temperatures can reach up to 30°C (86°F), especially between November and March. Nights are cooler but still pleasant.
Cusco
Cusco has a high-altitude Andean climate. Days are sunny and warm (18°C to 22°C / 64°F to 72°F), but nights can be cold (down to 5°C / 41°F), particularly from May to August. Rainy season runs from November to March.
Machu Picchu
Located in a subtropical mountain area, Machu Picchu is humid and warm during the day (20°C to 26°C / 68°F to 79°F) and cooler at night. Occasional rain showers occur even in the dry season.
Rainbow Mountain
This area experiences cold and unpredictable weather due to its high elevation. Expect chilly mornings (below 0°C / 32°F), strong sun during the hike, and possible snow or rain. Dress in layers and be prepared for wind.
Altitude
Lima
Located at sea level (0 m / 0 ft). No altitude concerns here.
Paracas, Ica & Nazca
These coastal and desert destinations range between 10 m and 600 m (33 ft – 1,970 ft). You won’t feel any altitude effects.
Cusco
Situated at 3,399 m (11,152 ft), altitude sickness can be common. It’s recommended to rest upon arrival, hydrate well, and avoid heavy meals or strenuous activity the first day.
Machu Picchu
Machu Picchu sits at 2,430 m (7,972 ft). Generally, travelers feel more comfortable here than in Cusco. However, light symptoms of altitude adjustment can still occur.
Rainbow Mountain
This is the highest point of the tour, at around 5,200 m (17,060 ft). The hike is challenging due to the elevation, so acclimatization in Cusco is essential. Consider using altitude remedies and taking it slow.
Currency
The official currency is the Peruvian Sol (PEN). Many tourist spots accept US dollars, but carrying soles for local purchases and small tips is highly recommended.
Health & Safety
Tap water is not safe to drink — always use bottled water. Basic health care is accessible in cities. Carry a small first-aid kit and keep your valuables secure, especially in crowded places.
Connectivity
Wi-Fi is available in most hotels and tourist restaurants. Some rural or high-altitude areas like Rainbow Mountain may have limited or no signal.
What to Bring
Pack comfortable walking shoes, layered clothing, a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, a reusable water bottle, and your passport. A small daypack is ideal for daily excursions.
Entry Requirements
Most travelers can enter Peru without a visa for stays up to 90 days. Make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond your entry date.
Time Zone
Peru operates on GMT -5 all year round, without daylight saving time.
Electricity
Electric power is 220V with Type A and C plugs. Bring a universal adapter if your devices use different plug types.
Tipping
Tipping is optional but appreciated. A 5–10% tip is common for guides, drivers, and restaurant service staff if the service was good.
