The Inca Trail is more than just a walk in the Andes; it is a designed journey through the sacred geography that has been created through the influence of faith, cosmography, and ritual. Even before the advent of tourists on the Inca Trail, there was the spiritual journey of the pilgrimage that was meant to ready the traveler for the shock of Machu Picchu. This still happens on the Inca Trail today, making the journey an Inca Trail spiritual one.
This process occurs over time. Physical activity, silence, and topography combine to calm the mind enough to permit meditation on the Inca Trail without much conscious thought. This is more than traveling through space; it is a journey through self as well.
