The Waqrapukara tour takes you completely off the grid. While everyone else is crowding into the Sacred Valley, this place sits totally isolated on top of a jagged rock formation that looks like a pair of horns. It’s an ancient Inca fortress built right on the edge of a massive canyon and hardly anyone goes there.
Getting to the ruins is a commitment. You have to drive through remote mountain villages and hike across raw, windy highland terrain. There are no paved paths or tourist crowds here. Most of the time, you’ll have the entire trail and the massive stone terraces completely to yourself.
The views over the canyon cliffs are dizzying, and the sheer scale of the stone architecture is wild. It feels completely untouched by modern tourism. If you want to experience the Andes the way they used to be quiet, heavy and slightly intimidating this is the spot.
